Legend has it that the god Izanagi and goddess Izanami created Japan and all the gods that inhabited the country. However, when Izanami gave birth to Kagutsumo-no-Kami, the god of fire, she suffered extreme burns and died in agony. In his sorrow, Izanagi decided to travel to the underworld to bring his wife back.
Izanami agrees to return with Izanagi to the land of the living, but must get permission to leave from Yomotsu-kami, the god of the underworld. She tells Izanagi that he must promise not to look upon her until she gets permission to leave. However, Izanagi breaks his promise and tries to get a look at Izanami. When he does, he is shocked to find that her body is rotten and ugly with decay.
Enraged that he broke his promise, Izanami turns into a demon and, together with Yomotsu-Shikome (the hag of the underworld), she chases after her husband, determined to kill him. Izanagi manages to outrun the demons all the way to the mortal realm which lies beyond the gate to the underworld, Hirasaka.
