Set during the reign of Emperor Ōjin (270-310), this is the story of how the emperor uses his prowess with bow and arrow to defeat a threat from a neighboring country that attacks Tsukushi Province in Kyushu. It should be noted that since days of old, Emperor Ōjin was believed to be the god of bow and arrow.
Born of Empress Jingū, the name Ōjin (meaning "god king") was given to him posthumously; he was known as Hondawake-no-Mikoto during his life and, according to Shinto and Japanese Buddhism, he was also the divine spirit of the deity Hachiman, enshrined first at the Usa Shrine in Oita Prefecture.
